Do you need a roof repair or a new roof?
Most of the time, a single leak or a few damaged shingles on a roof under 15 years old can be repaired. Replacement makes sense when damage is widespread, the decking is soft in many places, or the roof is near the end of its life. Greg inspects the roof and tells you which it is.

Where is the leak actually coming from?
Water rarely shows up on the ceiling right below the spot where it gets in. It slips under a shingle or a piece of flashing, runs along the roof deck or a rafter, and drips wherever it finds a low point. That's why patching the shingles directly above a ceiling stain often fixes nothing.
The usual sources on North Shore roofs:
- Flashing around chimneys, skylights and sidewalls
- Cracked rubber boots on plumbing vent pipes
- Valleys, where two roof planes meet and water concentrates
- Nail pops and lifted or cracked shingles
- Ice dams at the eaves in winter
Finding the source means checking the roof and, where we can get in, the attic. Stains on the sheathing, damp insulation and daylight around a pipe all point back to where the water enters.
What kinds of storm damage do we repair?
Nor'easters, summer thunderstorms and falling limbs all take a toll on North Shore roofs. The damage we fix most often:

What should you do right after storm damage?
- Stay safe. Don't climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Keep away from downed wires and call the utility or 911. If a limb is resting on the roof, leave it for a professional.
- Limit the water inside. Move furniture and valuables, put buckets under drips, and keep people out from under a ceiling that's sagging with water. If water is near lights or outlets, shut off power to that area.
- Take photos and video. Shoot the roof and yard from the ground, then the inside: stains, wet insulation, damaged belongings. Keep receipts for anything you spend on emergency protection. If you plan to file a claim, check your policy or call your insurer to learn their process.
- Get temporary protection on. A tarp over the damaged area keeps rain out until the permanent repair. We do emergency tarping.
- Get the roof inspected. Lifted shingles and cracked flashing often can't be seen from the ground and turn into leaks weeks later.

How does Greg inspect a damaged roof?
Greg personally inspects most jobs. He looks at the whole roof, not just the spot you called about: shingle condition and granule loss, flashing at every chimney, skylight and pipe, the valleys, the ridge, the vents, and the gutters and edges. Where he can get into the attic, he checks for staining, damp or soft decking and signs of poor ventilation.
Then you get a written estimate that explains what's wrong, what it takes to fix it, and whether a repair will hold or replacement is the better use of your money. Do you repair metal roofs as well as shingles?
Yes. On asphalt roofs we replace missing and damaged shingles, replace cracked vent boots, repair valleys and ridge caps, and replace rotted sections of decking. On flat roofs we patch and repair EPDM rubber.
On metal roofs we repair seams, trim, fasteners and flashing, and replace damaged panels. We're a certified Drexel Metals installer, so we know how standing-seam systems go together, which matters when you're taking part of one apart. More on that on our metal roofing page.
Why do chimneys and skylights leak?
They're two of the most common leak points on any roof. Flashing is the metal that seals the joint between the roof and the chimney or skylight. When it loosens, corrodes, or the sealant behind it dries out, water runs straight in. On chimneys, cracked mortar and a failing crown can also let water in above the roofline, which is why a chimney can leak even when the flashing looks fine.

How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
From the ground, look for missing or flipped shingles, shingle pieces in the yard, bent flashing or trim, and a lot of granules in the gutters. Inside, check ceilings and the attic for new stains. Some damage isn't visible from below, so an inspection after a major storm is worth it.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?
Many homeowners do both. Check your policy or call your insurer to understand their process, and don't wait on that call to stop water coming in. We can document what we find on the roof.
Can ice dam damage be repaired?
