If you've ever seen icicles hanging off a roof edge and thought it looked kind of nice, it's not — it's usually a sign of an ice dam actively forcing water under your shingles. We deal with ice dam damage every winter on the North Shore, and almost all of it is preventable with the right combination of ventilation, insulation, and roofing details.
How Ice Dams Actually Form
An ice dam isn't caused by cold weather alone — it's caused by uneven roof temperature. Here's the sequence:
- Heat escapes from the living space into the attic (through poor insulation or air leaks).
- That heat warms the underside of the roof deck, melting snow near the ridge while the eaves stay cold.
- Meltwater runs down the roof and refreezes right at the cold eave overhang, where there's no heat from below.
- Ice builds up into a dam, and water backs up behind it — with nowhere to go but under your shingles.
The core issue is almost never the roof itself. It's an attic that's too warm relative to the outside air. A cold, well-ventilated attic keeps the whole roof surface at a uniform temperature, so snow melts evenly (or not at all) instead of melting at the top and refreezing at the bottom.
The Damage Ice Dams Cause
- Water backing up under shingles and into the roof deck, insulation, and ceilings
- Stained or sagging interior ceilings and walls
- Damaged gutters — the weight of ice can pull gutters and fascia away from the house
- Mold growth in attic insulation that stays wet after a thaw
The Fixes That Actually Work
1. Attic Insulation
Adding or upgrading attic floor insulation is the single highest-impact fix. It keeps heat in the living space where it belongs, instead of leaking up into the attic and warming the roof deck from below.
2. Attic Ventilation
Proper soffit and ridge ventilation keeps a continuous flow of cold outside air moving through the attic, which keeps the roof deck temperature consistent from ridge to eave. This is often the missing piece even in homes with decent insulation.
3. Air Sealing
Gaps around recessed lighting, bathroom fans, and the attic hatch let warm, moist air leak straight into the attic. Sealing these is inexpensive and often overlooked.
4. Ice and Water Shield
Massachusetts building code requires an ice and water shield membrane under shingles in vulnerable areas near the eaves — this is a self-sealing barrier that stops water even if ice does form. Every roof we install includes it as standard practice, not an upsell.
5. Gutter Condition

Already Have an Ice Dam?
Don't take a hammer or ice pick to it — that's the fastest way to damage shingles that were otherwise fine. Steam removal is the safe method for actively removing ice, and it's worth having a professional handle it if water is already visibly backing up under the roofline. Once the immediate ice is dealt with, that's the time to address the ventilation and insulation root cause so it doesn't happen again next winter.
